Train from Hat Yai to Penang นั่งรถไฟ: จากหาดใหญ่ ไป ปีนัง

This is my experience taking train from Hat Yai to Penang in September 2019. This route is actually quite a Thai Backpacker’s 101, so easy, so cheap. Unless you concern about safety in the Southern border. But since my aunt lives in Hat Yai, I don’t really think it’s scary.

The route I took were:
1. Hat Yai – Padang Besar
2. Padang Besar – Butterworth
3. Butterworth – Penang (via Ferry)

เมื่อกลางเดือนกันยายน 2019 ที่ผ่านมา เราได้มีโอกาสทำทริปที่เราอยากทำมาตลอดคือการ นั่งรถไฟ จากหาดใหญ่ไปยังบัตเตอร์เวิร์ธ เพื่อนั่งเฟอร์รี่ข้ามต่อไปยังปีนังค่ะ โดยรอบนี้เราไม่ได้เดินทางคนเดียว แต่พาเพื่อนไปด้วยอีกคน (จริงๆคือล่อลวงไปสำเร็จ) ถ้าอ่านบล็อก ไปเที่ยว มงแซงมิเชล หรือ Isle of Skye จะรู้ว่าเราชอบ นั่งรถไฟ มาก

สำหรับทริปเราใช้เวลาที่หาดใหญ่ 2 คืน ออกเดินทางไปยังปีนังรอบเช้าตรู่อีกวัน แล้วก็อยู่ปีนังอีก2คืนก่อนเข้าKLแล้วก็สิงคโปร์ค่ะ ส่วนในบล็อกนี้เราจะเล่าเรื่องการเดินทางไปปีนังค่ะ

เริ่มนั่งรถไฟจากหาดใหญ่ : Thai train from Hat Yai

จากหาดใหญ่ เราต้องเดินทางไป ปาดังเบซาร์ (ฝั่งมาเลเซีย ไม่ใช่ฝั่งไทยนะคะ มี2สถานีติดกัน) รฟท.ที่เรานั่งนั้น ซื้อตั๋วได้ที่สถานีหาดใหญ่วันเดินทางหรือก่อนจะเดินทางได้เลยค่ะ เราซื้อก่อนวันเดินทาง1วัน เพราะรถออกเช้ามาก ไม่อยากเร่งรีบ

After reading from Thai online forums, I found out that there are 2 trains leaving daily from Hat Yai to Padang Besar. One at 7:30 (arr 9:22 Malaysia time) and another one at 13:05 (arr 14:58 Malaysia Time) And you can’t buy ticket online, the only way is at the station (don’t forget to bring ID card/passport when purchasing ticket).

I booked a hostel in Hat Yai so I could catch the 7:30 train in the morning and catch the 9:31 train to Butterworth (Malaysia time is 1 hour ahead of Thailand so the train arriving at 9:22 is 8:22 in Thailand. Don’t forget to change your time. And since Padang Besar is at the borderline, the phone carrier might still detect Thai signal and won’t automatically switch the timezone).

นั่งรถมาได้เกือบชั่วโมง ก็ถึงสถานี ปาดังเบซาร์ (ฝั่งไทย) แต่เราอย่าเพิ่งลง ให้นั่งผ่านรั้วลวดหนามชายแดนก่อน แล้วลงสถานีถัดไป ชื่อ ปาดังเบซาร์เหมือนกัน แต่เป็นฝั่งมาเลย์ค่ะ เมื่อเราข้ามแดนมา เวลาที่มาเลย์จะเร็วกว่าไทย 1 ชั่วโมงนะคะ อย่าลืมปรับเวลากันด้วย มือถือเราต้องจับสัญญาณตอนรถไฟวิ่งออกไปนอกปาดังฯสักพักถึงจะขึ้นว่าปรับไปอีกชั่วโมง

There are TWO Padang Besar stations, one at Thailand side, and another one at Malaysia side. Don’t get off at Thailand side! Stay on the train and get off at the next stop: Padang Besar (Malaysia) And don’t forget to switch the timezone!

ที่ปาดังเบซาร์ เราจะเดินเข้าช่องต.ม.ไทย ปั๊มออกนอกประเทศ แล้วก็เลี้ยวไปอีกมุมเข้าต.ม.มาเลย์ปั๊มเข้ามาเลย์ แล้วก็เอากระเป๋าทุกอย่างเข้าเครื่องแสกนตรวจศุลกากรเข้ามาเลย์ที่นี่ค่ะ ทุกอย่างจบอยู่ในตึกเดียวตามสไตล์นั่งรถข้ามแดน

Once at Padang Besar, just follow the usual Immigration (both Thailand and Malaysia) and customs.

นั่งรถไฟ ไทย แล้วก็เปลี่ยนเป็น มาเลย์ : Then to the Malaysian Train

หลังจากผ่านต.ม.ที่ปาดังเบซาร์ เราก็ซื้อตั๋ว KTM ของมาเลย์ เพื่อนั่งไป Butterworth ตอนซื้อก็จะงงๆเวลานิดห่อย แต่ก็นั่นแหละค่ะเวลาจะเร็วกว่าบ้านเรา1ชั่วโมง ต้องคอยมองนาฬิกาเขาเอาไว้นะคะ

After the Malaysia immigration, I bought the KTM (Malaysian train) to Butterworth. The timezone got me confused at this point.

ตั๋วรถไฟมาเลย์ 11.40 ริงกิต (ประมาณ 90 บาท)

The KTM ticket from Padang Besar to Butterworth is 11.40 MYR
**** Keep the ticket with you!!! You have to use it, when leaving the station at Butterworth****

รถไฟมาเลย์ ก็เป็นรถ KTM ที่ใช้วิ่งในเมืองอารมณ์ cityline ของแอร์พอร์ตลิ้งค์บ้านเราค่ะ แต่อันนี้วิ่ง 2 ชั่วโมงกันเลย เปลี่ยนอารมณ์มากค่ะจากชั้น3ไทย มารถไฟฟ้าเค้า

Switching from no a/c train to the Malaysia’s a/c and clean train was really refreshing. The train from Padang Besar to Butterworth is about 2 hours.

รถ KTM นี่ในกัวลาเราก็นั่งเวลาออกไป Batu Caves นะคะ เย็นๆสบายๆ นั่งมองวิวที่เหมือนบ้านเราไป2ชั่วโมงก็มาถึง Butterworth ค่ะ

จากสถานีรถไฟ Butterworth เดินออกมาที่ Terminal (ด้านล่างเป็นที่ขึ้นบัสไปต่างเมือง ด้านบนเป็นที่ขึ้น Ferry ไปเกาะปีนัง) มีห้องน้ำเข้าฟรีใน Terminal นะคะ ไม่ต้องเข้าแบบจ่ายเงินในสถานีรถไฟ
ค่า Ferry 1.20 ริงกิต (ประมาณ 10 บาท)

At the Butterworth railway station, continue walking to the terminal (coach station downstair, ferry pier upstair). There is a restroom inside the terminal free of charge (unlike the Railway station that you have to pay)
The Ferry ticket costs 1.20 MYR

Ferry จะใช้เวลาประมาณ 20 นาที แต่ก็เผื่อเวลาสัก 30 นาที เผื่อลมแรงฝนตกต่างๆค่ะ เข้ามาไม่ค่อยมีที่นั่ง ก็ยืนเกาะขอบถ่ายรูปกันไป คนกับรถอยู่ร่วมกัน เราเองไม่กล้าเดินเข้าไปมากกลัวกระเป๋าไปขูดรถชาวบ้าน

It normally takes about 20 minutes for the ferry. But let’s say 30 minutes just in case of the weather.

มาถึงปีนังที่ท่า Jetty B แล้ว เราก็ออกเดินเท้าไปที่พักที่เราจองมา อยู่ห่างจากท่าเรือประมาณ 15นาทีเดินค่ะ แต่ถ้าใครอยู่ในละแวก Georgetown นี้ มีรถเมล์วิ่งวนฟรีด้วยนะคะ เรียกว่า รถ CAT อย่าลืมลองดูว่าที่พักใกล้อยู่หรือเปล่าค่ะ รายละเอียด รถ CAT

After arriving at Penang’s Jetty B, there are free buses taking you to Georgetown and serroundings, called CAT bus don’t forget to check for the details. But from Jetty B to my hostel and other area was walkable.

สรุปการนั่งรถไฟ / To summarise this train from Hat Yai trip

ออกจากหาดใหญ่ 7.30 มาถึงปีนัง 13.30 (12.30 เวลาบ้านเรา) 5ชั่วโมง รวมเวลารอต่อรถไฟต่อเฟอร์รี่ เดินหาของกินใน Terminal เฟอร์รี่
และส่วนค่าใช้จ่าย เราหมดเงินไป 150 บาท ในการเดินทางค่ะ เป็นอารมณ์การเดินทางแบบแบคแพคเกอร์ที่เราชอบมากเลยค่ะ

I departed from Hat Yai at 7:30 and arrived in Penang at 13:30 (12:30 Thailand time). It was a 5-hour-trip including waiting for train and ferry, and wandering around the terminal. I have spent 150 THB for transportations of this train+ferry trip.
